About The Program
Operation Homefront's Transitional Housing Program allows these service members to live rent-free while they go through the transition process. Upon placement, Operation Homefront counselors set up a mandatory schedule that these service members, veterans, and their families must follow. They are required to attend support groups, workshops, benefits briefings, and resume writing classes, as determined by their counselor. They also undergo one-on-one financial counseling to reduce debt and build savings. OH counselors meet with each military family every 30 days to review their financial situation, determine where they are in the transition process, review their attendance in the required workshops and classes, and determine their ability to live on their own. Once they have become self- sufficient, OH counselors help them find suitable housing in the area they intend to live on a permanent basis. Upon completion of the program, veterans and their families should have VA benefits in place, debt significantly reduced and emergency savings in place.
Our properties are fully furnished, complete with full utility services, internet access, cable TV, and telephone service. Our comfortable apartments have all the typical features of home.

Wounded Warriors are a specific concern for Operation Homefront. Service members disabled from injuries return home where they are discharged from service, have to vacate base housing and have to wait for their VA compensation to begin. Most of them experience a 50-75% cut in pay and their spouse may need to leave work to care for them. This can quickly put severe financial strain on their families as it may take months for their benefits to kick in.
As a result, our young veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan are at risk of becoming homeless if
programs are not put into place to help these service members transition back into civilian life while
keeping some stability for their families. That is why Operation Homefront has established the
Operation Homefront Transitional Housing Program.

Transitional Homes for Community Reintegration
Operation Homefront is excited to announce our newest housing program, Transitional Homes for Community
Reintegration (THCR)!
Operation Homefront understands the many challenges veterans and their families face while transitioning from a
military to civilian community. Our THCR program was designed as a gateway for stability so veteran families can
remain strong, stable and secure in life outside of the military.
The latest news: See veteran family welcomed to their rent-free home in Florida.
Our THCR program serves veteran families who are within 12 months of discharge, served honorably, and are willing to work towards self-sufficiency by providing temporary rent-free housing, financial education, and support services.
Upon being selected for the program, families will be assigned a designated caseworker and financial counselor who
will work with them to create realistic financial, educational, employment and personal goal plans. Families will gain knowledge on the home buying process, work to improve credit scores, pay off debt, accumulate emergency savings, and establish ties to the community they reside in.

While the program is technically “rent free”, families will be required to pay a monthly fee that will be refunded upon program graduation (2-3 years). Those funds can be used for a significant down payment on a home of their own or whatever they feel most beneficial for the needs of their family in the community they reside in.
Families are expected to have a strong connection to the community in which the home they apply for is located and
a strong desire to remain in that community upon program graduation.
WHO CAN APPLY?
Honorably discharged veterans who are within 1-year of discharge. Veterans do not have to be injured or have a
combat deployment to apply.
WHAT DO WE LOOK FOR?
The committee will consider several factors when selecting a family to include: working towards financial stability
(savings, income, etc.), connection to the community where the home is located (family support, employment,
educational opportunities, etc.), commendable military service, and family size.
HOW LONG DOES THE PROCESS TAKE?
On average, it takes 90 days to select a family for our program. During that time, applicants may be contacted if
documents or additional information is needed. Viable applicants will be presented to the selection committee. After a decision has been made, only the veteran matched will be contacted. We do not have the resources to contact every applicant that applies.
ARE THE HOMES RENT-FREE?
Families will be required to pay a monthly fee that will be reimbursed upon program graduation. Program fees will be determined by the financial counselor and likely range from $500-$800 per month. Families will be responsible for utility costs, a rehab fee, and a pet deposit (if applicable). Operation Homefront will provide lawn care, landscaping, and pest control.
WHERE ARE THE HOMES?
We are currently accepting applications for a home being built in Yorkville, IL. Please see details and apply below.
